Earth Angels - 2007-2008

Newsletter August 2007

Sharon Baker’s Column

My dear Angels:
To each of you congratulations, I’m sure each of your installations was wonderful. I’m sorry that I could not be to everyone, but it was somewhat impossible. It was a joy to participate in some of the installations and I thank you for asking me. I wish, for all of you, a happy and successful year.

Thank you for the generous gift that you gave me at installation and for all that you did at Grand Chapter. The Ways and Means table and Jewelry booth were a big success. Pat, you did a fantastic job getting ready for Grand Chapter and for the Jewelry Booth. To the ladies who were on-top of the Ways and Means and everyone who was there to help, thank you.

Congratulations on a job well done to all of the Earth Angels who served our jurisdiction in the Lamplighter year.

Cudo’s to Jerry Lou Gerber for the All Member Banquet. It was a wonderful evening with piano entertainment that was toe tapping and making you want to sing kind of music. The centerpieces and table favors rolled into ones was a clever idea. Thank you Darrell Hanan for the apples.

Sister Patti, thank you for taking on the job of badges. You are doing a wonderful job, it is monumental and you are accomplishing it with much success.

Earth Angel Grand Family, welcome and we hope that you will join us at our meetings. We are now one big family.

To Gerry Brown for organizing the All Star Picnic, it was great and we all had a wonderful time.

A big fund raiser is coming up—The Strawberry Booth at Sumpter. If you have some time, please travel to this beautiful location and give the Earth Angels a hand or bake some cupcakes. The recipe is in the minutes, as well as who might transport them.

I had planned to go, but due to other commitments for Friday and Saturday, I will be staying on this side of the mountains.

I am looking forward to greeting you at our meeting at Adarel Chapter in Jacksonville on Sept. 15 th and at my reception the same evening in Medford, at the Masonic Center.

Best wishes to each of you as you begin a new Eastern Star year.

God bless you and Earth Angel love,

Sharon

Editor’s note: This was Hunt’s column from the non-existent “July Newsletter.” I apologize for the delay, but we had a few issues with the changing of the guard. I am sending this out as per Jennifer’s mailing lists. If you wish to receive an emailed copy INSTEAD of (or in addition to) a mailed copy, please email me at TheFrogPrincess@gmail.com to get on the list. Remember: the more online copies, the less we have to pay for postage. Marissa Unger

Hunt’s Main Comments

Dear Earth Angels:

Grand Chapter is now somewhat of a blur but we know successfully completed. Thank you all for the courtesies extended to Patti and I during the State Faire Session.

The Installation Season is now complete. It was my pleasure to visit many of the local Installations and meet some new friends. Congratulations to all of the newly installed officers, elected and appointed, and I welcome all of the Earth Angels to A Garden of Friendship.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we hope to have some fun also. WGM Sharon and I have chosen Cancer Research and Home Endowment as our projects this year. We hope each Chapter can generate fund raisers to help support these worthwhile charities.

My fun symbol for this year is the White Oak Tree, signifying strength and stability. Further, Sister Patti and I have some white oaks on our property, and, Sister Sharon, WGM, lives on “ White Oak Drive”. A natural “tie-in”.

Sister Patti and I have had some Oak Trees made into both a Tux Saver and a Pin which are available at $5.00 each with all proceeds going to Home Endowment. I apologize for the confusion I have caused with my “fun” symbol. The Oak Tree sale is not a Home Endowment project; Sister Patti and I are just making the Oak Tree available and donating proceeds to Home Endowment. We also have available the Session Charm and Pin.

One of the LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE is the “Law of Coffee” which states “As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold.”

Fraternal Love,
Hunt M. Compton
Worthy Grand Patron

P.S. Remember Home Endowment

CALLING ALL EARTH ANGELS!
We’re so good we had two meetings in one day! Thank you to everyone who attended the All-Membership Picnic and actively participated in our EA meetings. Our group is super, always willing to step up to the plate and lend a hand, volunteer for a duty or serve on a committee. I know just how proud Sister Sharon and Brother Hunt are of all of you. Me too!

CALLING ALL EARTH ANGELS!
Please plan to attend the upcoming receptions in September as we honor Sister Sharon, Worthy Grand Matron (Sept 15 th in Medford) and Brother Hunt, Worthy Grand Patron (Sept 29 th in Salem). We’ve got a special (FUN!) addendum planned for each of them and we need all the help we can get from you Worthy Matrons and Worthy Patrons. No need to attend a practice, just show up!

CALLING ALL EARTH ANGELS!
In the Portland area, Salem area, along the I-5 corridor? I am planning to drive to So. Oregon on the 15 th, leaving from Portland early in the morning with a stop in Salem, in time to make the luncheon at Adarel Chapter in Jacksonville. I have room for two more folks in my car if you want to come along; this is an overnight trip as we will be attending Sharon’s reception that evening at the Medford Masonic Center.

I look forward to a fandoodleytastic year and will do my very best to serve you properly as the group’s president. We’ve got a great corps of officers too! (Brother Phil, don’t forget I will probably not be at the November meeting ~ I’ll send a post card from Africa!) Contact me anytime by email: gardnem@msn.com or on my cell phone (503) 201-5620 w/voicemail. See you soon! Earth Angel Blessings, Michele

Minutes of the previous meeting–7/28/07, at the Picnic
EA All-Masonic picnic meeting minutes in Cottage Grove 7/28/07

The meeting was called to order by our most outgoing president, Pat Deter. After installation of officers and our picnic lunch, our newly installed president, Michelle Gardner recapped the meeting and some late introductions and added business items were included in our minutes. There were approximately 37 in attendance including escorts.

Introductions included WGM, Sharon Baker; WGP, Hunt Compton; PGP, Harry Baker; Grand Officers—Marshal, Doris Hedges; Warder, Stella Bryant; Organist, Sharon Cooke; Esther, Marion Lutz; Adah, Karen Beebe; & AGC, Connie Harris. Grand Committee Members—Home Endowment, Patti Compton, Chr; Cancer, Sharon Jackson; Special Projects, Phil Barr: Youth & Membership, Carol Currie, Chr & Susan Stevens; ESTARL, ; Grand Representatives—Ted Crocker, IA; Diana Barr, AL; & April Gay, TN.

There were no minutes as our outgoing secretary was not present.

Unfinished business: The Strawberry booth at Sumpter was discussed. The dates are Labor Day weekend--Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday—August 31, September 1, 2, and 3. We can use the money and in spite of the work, it is a lot of fun. Lodging can be found in Baker City or your motor home. We need to run at least 3 shifts of 4 people all four days. Friday includes set-up and Monday includes tear down. We need more volunteers. Please contact Gerry Brown.

We were informed that the Honey Bears and Bees had lots of supplies left over after the last strawberry function. A motion to buy all of the leftover supplies other than the free cupcakes was called for by Phil Barr, seconded, and passed. Discussion about the left over cupcakes ended in a decision to make fresh cupcakes and use the left over cupcakes as backup should we run short. We need volunteers to bake standard size cupcakes from yellow cake mix (please do not deviate as we need uniformity ). One box makes 18 cupcakes. They need to be packed in shoeboxes and layered with waxed paper. (Do not pack in plastic bags or boxes as the moisture makes the cupcakes soggy .) Bring them with you if you are going to be there or get them to someone in your area that will be going.

It was noted that the Lamplighters bought the permit for this year and we are to buy the permit for next year. Also, we need people who have current food handler’s licenses so we can man the booth. They can be obtained online at a cost of $10 providing the test is passed. Three people announced they had their licenses and would be there.

Sharon Baker stated that she was pleased with the decorations at Grand Chapter. The bill for decorations needs to be submitted a.s.a.p. so that Grand Chapter can close their books as they allow $100 towards our expenses.

The jewelry booth was discussed. The leftover jewelry from Kistners was sent back for a full reimbursement; the jewelry we received from the Lamplighters was passed on to the Oregon Gems, and the jewelry that Pat purchased will be added to our ways and means table.

Sharon B said that we still have some blue EA bags available so she would like to have the order form rerun in our newsletter. Also, please rerun the order form for badges and scarves.

A question came up about dues for new Earth Angels. WGP Hunt referred to our by=laws which said:

There was an inquiry about our new website. Our official website is www.oregonoes. org It is continually being updated as soon as information is passed on.

Treasures report: A balance of approximately $7,049 with one bill under-figured by 24.71 and some recent uncashed checks totaling $1700 to $1800. A check to Sign Man for $150 has never cleared the bank. Carol is to check it out. The one NSF check has been taken care of including the fees.

Sickness & Cheer : It was reported that Billy Schawaker, Junction City, recently suffered a hemorrhaging stroke with no permanent damage and is doing well; Lisa Stallings, the Barr’s 18-year old granddaughter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and in surgery found it to be more extensive than believed. It was removed and she will be undergoing heavy chemo treatment and can use our prayers; Liz Day had a knee replaced; Roberta Bergman was in the hospital for congestive heart failure and is happy to be back home; Marlene Temchuck underwent heart surgery and came through beautifully and then gaot a leg infection from part of the procedure that put her back in the hospital—she is now home recuperating. Cards will be sent to all except the Barr family who request our continued prayers. It was also announced that Mary Mays not an EA but whom most of us know and is recovering from a hip replacement just had cancer removed from her face and is suffering from feet problems—her husband Paul is doing well. Also needing our thoughts and prayers are E’Laine and Richard Armstrong—he was just diagnosed with a serious heart problem.

New contacts for sickness and cheer were appointed. They are as follows: Portland & NW—Chris Nacheff Manaker; Coast—Doris Hedges; Central Oregon—Lois Germeyer; Willamette Valley—Karen Beebe; Southern Oregon—Bonnie Crocker; and Eastern Oregon—Sharon Cooke.

Correspondence: A thank-you note from Sharon B was read expressing her gratitude for the generous gift, our love, work, support. Brother Hunt’s thank-you note was unavailable to be read since it was sent to the recording secretary and she was not in attendance.

New Business: It’s time to audit our books for the coming year. Diana Barr was appointed Chair and Sharon Jackson and Shari Durgan were added to the committee. Carol Currie is to get the books to Sharon Jackson who will then contact Diana Barr.

We are looking for a volunteer co-chairman to work with Gerry Hubbard in the flower booth at Grand Chapter this year. Doris Hedges donated lots of silk flowers to our flower booth.

Blanche Davis is our new contact for luncheons. Her phone number is 503.363.8787 and there will be a form at the end of the newsletter. She will be setting up luncheons for the year and will post them in the next newsletter. Be sure to leave your name, chapter, and phone number on her answering machine.

WGM Sharon requested $400 for the purchase of some mementos. It was so moved and passed.

Announcements: ˜ Martha’s friendship night is Thursday, August 2 nd at 6:30p in Reedsport. It will be a Hawaiian affair with lots of luau food and fun. Special table decorations will go to a lucky few. All including Grand family members will be wearing the appropriate Hawaiian apparel.

Good of the Order: WGM Sharon Baker requested that everyone email her with their email address so that she can get her email addresses updated. She also suggested that everyone do the same to the recording secretary.

WGP Hunt expressed his thanks to all who helped to make our part of Grand Chapter a great success. He reminded us that Patti has Earth Angel scarves for sale and is handling Earth Angel badges. He also has EA charms and pins for sale as well as the Oak Tree pin as a fund raiser for Home Endowment.

Installation of Officers : WGP Hunt performed the duties of the Installing Officer with the aid of Patti, Installing Marshal; and Sharon Jackson, Installing Chaplain. The following officers received a bona fide oak jewel with appropriate design of their office: President, Michelle Gardner; First Vice President, Phil Barr; and Second Vice President, Blanche Davis.

Meeting adjourned .

Attest, Sharon Jackson, Recording Secretary, Pro Tem
