Forward from the General Grand Chapter:
Over four years ago, a letter was received from the George Washington Masonic Memorial regarding a Family of Freemasonry Exhibit and the General Grand Chapter was invited to participate with a display. Brother Fred Clarke selected this as his Special Project for 2009-2012 and Eastern Stars around the world were invited to donate to this project. Brother John Grobler, Acting Most Worthy Grand Patron, has continued this project and many donations have been received since November 2009 in honor or in memory of loved ones, including many in memory of Brother Fred.
Your Grand Chapter and it members had a part in this project and I wanted to share with you and your membership an invitation received by me for each of us.
It comes from the George Washington Masonic Memorial, 101 Callahan Drive, Alexandria VA 22301-2751.
The invitation reads as follows:
You are cordially invited to the opening of
THE FAMILY OF FREEMASONRY EXHIBIT

I know that each of you rejoice with Sisters Rennie and Margaret on the dedication of a permanent, public Eastern Star display at the George Washington Masonic Memorial that was Brother Fred Clarke’s Special Project.
A special thank you goes to Brother John Grobler, Acting Most Worthy Grand Patron, for sharing information on this project with our Sisters and Brothers during his travels for General Grand Chapter.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Fraternally,

Dorothy M. Dewing Memorial Scholarship Endowment
November 26, 2011
To the Officers & Members of all Oregon Subordinate Chapters:
The Dorothy M. Dewing Memorial Scholarship is presented to Eastern Star members, the children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren of Oregon Eastern Star members. They must be attending an accredited college or university located in the State of Oregon, and must be completing their Junior year. This scholarship is awarded to students in need of financial assistance for their Senior Year.
We often forget that the Dorothy M. Dewing Memorial Scholarship is a part of our Philanthropic Projects and donations by Chapters help to assist in building the fund allowable for distribution. According to the Oregon Grand Chapter By-laws, Section 132, paragraph 3, “only the interest derived from the funds in said Dorothy M. Dewing Eastern Star Scholarship Endowment Fund is to be used for scholarships. (2008).” Knowing that the interest rates have drastically fallen in past years, it difficult to build this fund, and your donations, either given individually or by Chapters will help in supporting this project.
We ask that your Chapter designate a “paper drive” during the year to this Scholarship fund, which is an approved on-going OES project that takes the support of all of our members in order for us to provide scholarships to our family members.
Any support you can offer to this project will be greatly appreciated, not only by our committee, but by those students who will become recipients.
Fraternally,
Judie Kissinger, Chairman
Dorothy M. Dewing Memorial Scholarship Endowment Committee
Marie Chambers, Committee Member

We are pleased to announce that the Masonic-Eastern Star Home Board (Board) is making great strides in the improvement of the operation of the Masonic-Eastern Star Home (Home), also known as The Jennings-McCall Center (JMC). This letter is to clarify some of the events which are taking place.
The Board has always had a significant number of responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:
- The care of all the residents of the Home. This is and always will be our number one priority.
- The welfare of our employees. This responsibility is second only to the care of the residents.
- Maintain and improve the JMC facility. We must always strive to keep the buildings and surrounding property in excellent condition. Also, improvements to and maintenance of the buildings are necessary to serve the residents and provide the employees with a safe and efficient environment in which to work.
- Continually endeavor to improve the financial stability of the Home operations and investments which support it.
To those ends the Board has been working diligently for the last two years researching a range of alternatives to best achieve these goals. We have concluded the best direction for the future of JMC is to contract with a professional management company for the operational functions of the Home. The Board has evaluated and interviewed a number of companies specializing in operating senior housing facilities similar to ours. We selected the company best suited for this purpose, Aidan Health Services, Inc. (Aidan), because their philosophy most closely reflects the goals and concerns of the Board. Aidan is now in the early stages of transitioning into their management role at JMC, and we are confident the outcome will be a more efficient independent living and assisted living facility.
Our goal is to make this transition as seamless as possible. There will be changes, of that there can be no doubt, but we are striving to minimize the impact of those changes, especially on the residents and employees.
Members of the Board and representatives of Aidan have scheduled multiple meetings with the residents and employees to explain the transition and our strong desire to make improvements in the lives of our residents and provide a stable, professional workplace for the employees
There will be further updates in the Oregon Masonic News and OES Newsletter. We are going to make every effort to keep residents, employees and members of our fraternities informed as to the status of the transition and improvements which will be implemented.
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Ed Bousquet, IPGM Connie Harris, JPGM

“God made my cathedral under the stars;
He gave my cathedral trees for its spires;
He hewed me an Altar in the depth of a hill,
He gave me for a hymnal a rock-bedded rill;
He voiced me a sermon of heavenly light
In the beauty around me-
And I felt as I knelt on the velvet-like sod
I had supped of the Spirit, in the Temple of God.”
(This poem is from the Worthy Grand Matron’s Address in the proceedings of the “Blue Mountain Cathedral” Session when Sister Laurose was Worthy Grand Matron)
We extend our sympathy to our Sister’s family, Chapter and many friends. This memorial will be read in Subordinate Chapters at the first stated meeting after its receipt and the Altar draped in accordance with the rules of each chapter.

Announcement regarding Life Care at the Jennings McCall Center
In August of 2004, the Masonic & Eastern Star Home Board of Trustees voted to suspend action on application for admission to Life Care at the Jennings McCall Center. The primary reason behind this decision was brought about by a severe decline in revenue from the investment fund earnings used to support Life Care members, coupled with significant increases in the cost of health care, labor and supplies provided to Life Care members. To sustain the levels of care and attention for remaining members this moratorium will remain in affect until the Board determines that we can prudently accept additional members.
In May of 2009, the Board of Trustees voted to approve the formation of the Outreach Resources Board (O.R.B) and to implement Masonic and Eastern Star Home (M.E.S.H) Outreach Resources in Oregon. The purpose of M.E.S.H Outreach Resources is to identify and coordinate needed services for members that may improve the quality of their life and help them stay in an independent living situation. This will be achieved by collaboration of the Masonic & Eastern Star Home, Outreach Resources Board, Outreach Coordinator and members of Masonic Lodges and Eastern Star Chapters. M.E.S.H Outreach Resources is for eligible members who may be experiencing declining health and/or difficulty functioning in the home, feelings of isolation, living in an environment that is rundown, unsanitary, or unsafe, and/or having difficulty accessing transportation.
