“Crossing the Bar”
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark.
For tho’ from out our bourne of
Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have cross the bar.”
by Lord Alfred Tennyson

“They stood around our Altar
Hands linked like yours and mine.
The Golden Chain thus lengthened
Has been broken for a time.
But earthly links all crumble
The earth’s relations sever
And in the Resurrection Morn
We’ll find us back together.
We’ll all join hands again
This time around God’s Altar.
According to His plan”

August 20, 2009
Dear Members,
WOW! Installations are all over, the last one was on August 17th, the All Masonic Picnic was a great success with approximately 140 in attendance, the Grand Family has had their Grand School of Instruction and we have toured the Shrine Hospital, OHSU and St. Vincent’s Hospital. The tour of the Home was cancelled along with the Birthday Party in August because of flu like symptoms among the members at the Home.
Remember you need to make a request for approval of Community Service Projects. Please keep track of hours and cost of these projects so we can report a total for Community Projects at Grand Chapter.
The web site, www.oregonoes.org is an excellent source of information, check out the calendar for Grand Receptions, Grand Visitations, Friendships, etc., announcements of Grand Representative Appointments; there are also pictures of Grand Installation. We hope to see many of you out at functions earning points for your travel pin. We have added a point for taking your proficiency this year. Contact your Secretary for more information on the traveling pin.
Fall is just around the corner and many social events are planned for September. The Grand Reception for the WGM, WGP, Grand Marshal, Grand Ruth and Grand Electa will be a free BBQ starting at noon on September 19th in Richland, Oregon. The first Grand Initiation will be at Blue Mountain Chapter in Elgin, on September 20th at 10 AM. On September 24th is our first Grand Visitation will also be at Blue Mountain Chapter, our WGP’s Chapter. September 26th is the Grand Master’s Reception at Wilsonville and the next day September 27th will be Creswell Star’s 100th Anniversary, at Cottage Grove Chapter, where they are demonstrating the Old Fashion Degrees with a Reception to follow.
Now, for the BIG NEWS - We will be moving the Grand Chapter Office to Oregon City on the fourth floor of Multnomah Lodge. We have found a spacious 700 sq. ft. suite of rooms for $450.00 per month, a big saving from the $1170.00 per month at the Barbur Blvd facility. We have gone to cell phones so we could keep the land line number we had for the Grand Chapter Office and the fax line number is now the cell number of the Grand Treasurer. Please, if you have Verizon phone service, use it to call the Grand Chapter office and save us more money. With this change also comes a change of email addresses for the Grand Secretary, grandsecretary@oregonoes.org and Grand Treasurer, grandtreasurer@oregonoes.org , as you can see we are using our web site for these addresses and saving more money. These email changes will not take effect until you are notified by the Grand Secretary.
Our committee members will be out traveling to the chapters in their districts and asking for your support of the different projects. Brother Joe and I are emphasizing Home Endowment, Shrine Transportation and Scottish Rite Learning Centers this year. You will be hearing more about the Outreach Program soon. At Grand Chapter a NEW Committee was formed to help raise funds, and come up with ideas to raise funds for the Grand Chapter General Fund so we will not have to continue assessing our chapters more money to run Grand Chapter. This committee was named the General Fund Raiser Committee with Kathleen Gould as Chairman. She is already busy as a bee getting activities planned.
Now, for the BIG CHALLENGE - At Grand Chapter in June 2010, we are going to have a PIG PARTY & PARADE on Tuesday evening for the General Fund. We would like every Chapter to find a piggy bank, it must start out as a pig, decorate, clothe, jewel, sequin or disguise your pig. Feed your pigs with money all year long, fill it with change from your friends, your own pocket, watch for money on the ground, use it during the coin drill, just don’t go out and rob a bank. Remember to empty your pigs belly as many times as possible. Bring your pig all dressed up for the parade at Grand Chapter. Where we will parade, party and count the money we have collected. The Chapter from each association, ECOA, SO, PCA, Willamette Valley & NW that brings in the most money in their chapter pig will receive a Pizza Party or Hamburger Fry provided by Brother Joe and me, either during the summer or at a fall meeting in 2010. That is a total of 5 Parties!!
Individual Competition: Any Individual who would like to participate can get a piggy bank, must be a pig to start and feed on a regular basis. How about it Grand Officers and Escorts, Grand Representatives, Grand Committee Members, Worthy Matrons and Worthy Patrons, any member can join in the fun. Prizes will be for several categorizes, such as Best Dressed Pig and Pig Handler. My pig might look like a Queen Bee, does this give you any ideas?
For those attending General Grand Chapter in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oregon’s attire will be the blue blazers.
Have a great 2009 -2010 Honey Bear and Bumble Bee Year!! See You Soon.

Announcement regarding Life Care at the Jennings McCall Center
In August of 2004, the Masonic & Eastern Star Home Board of Trustees voted to suspend action on application for admission to Life Care at the Jennings McCall Center. The primary reason behind this decision was brought about by a severe decline in revenue from the investment fund earnings used to support Life Care members, coupled with significant increases in the cost of health care, labor and supplies provided to Life Care members. To sustain the levels of care and attention for remaining members this moratorium will remain in affect until the Board determines that we can prudently accept additional members.
In May of 2009, the Board of Trustees voted to approve the formation of the Outreach Resources Board (O.R.B) and to implement Masonic and Eastern Star Home (M.E.S.H) Outreach Resources in Oregon. The purpose of M.E.S.H Outreach Resources is to identify and coordinate needed services for members that may improve the quality of their life and help them stay in an independent living situation. This will be achieved by collaboration of the Masonic & Eastern Star Home, Outreach Resources Board, Outreach Coordinator and members of Masonic Lodges and Eastern Star Chapters. M.E.S.H Outreach Resources is for eligible members who may be experiencing declining health and/or difficulty functioning in the home, feelings of isolation, living in an environment that is rundown, unsanitary, or unsafe, and/or having difficulty accessing transportation.
